Building Codes for All 50 States

50-State Code Research Guide

METAL BUILDING CODES
BY PROJECT LOCATION.

Code adoption changes over time and local amendments matter. Use this page as a research checklist for every U.S. project—not as a substitute for confirmation from the local authority having jurisdiction.

Every state still comes down to the local project address

States may adopt model codes statewide, delegate adoption to local jurisdictions, or use a combination of statewide rules and local amendments. Before engineering begins, confirm the requirements for the exact city, county or parcel where the building will be constructed.

Minimum information to verify for any state:

✓ Building-code edition
✓ Local amendments
✓ Ground snow / roof snow
✓ Wind speed & exposure
✓ Seismic criteria
✓ Frost depth
✓ Energy code
✓ Fire-code requirements
✓ Occupancy / risk category
✓ Permit submittal requirements
✓ Foundation drawing requirements
✓ Soils/geotechnical requirements

Why the job location is needed early

The project location is not just for freight. It is part of the engineering basis. A building quoted with assumptions from the wrong location may not represent the framing, foundation or permit requirements of the actual jobsite.

What to send us

  • Project city/state/ZIP
  • Any design criteria supplied by the jurisdiction
  • Building use and occupancy information
  • Approximate building dimensions
  • Known frost depth or mark it UNKNOWN
  • Any existing plans, site plan or foundation information
